Packington Hall, Whittington, Staffordshire, circa 1900. Likely built for Zachary Babington, a barrister and High Sheriff of Staffordshire, whose daughter Mary married Theophilus Levett, town clerk of Lichfield. The architect of the home was James Wyatt. Spofforth Castle, situated midway between Harrogate and Wetherby, was a fortified structure built partially into the bedrock of the land which supports it. The ground had been the home of the de Percy family (who also owned Plumpton Rocks) since Norman times and in 1308, Henry de Percy obtained a licence to fortify the building. The family were on the losing side of the Battle of Towton in 1461 and afterwards the castle was partly destroyed. It was somewhat rebuilt in the sixteenth century but now stands as ruins. This shot was taken in the undercroft of the building; the oldest part of the remaining structure. It would have had a vaulted ceiling to support the hall that lay on the floor above. Notice the doorway at the bottom-right carved into the local bedrock - it used to be a secret passageway which emerged somewhere in the nearby village.

Orford Castle From English Heritage:An 18-sided drum with three square turrets, and a forebuilding reinforcing its entrance, the keep was built to a highly innovative design. The progress of its construction between 1165 and 1173 is extensively recorded in royal documents. Both exterior and interior survive almost intact, allowing visitors to explore the basement with its vital well, and the lower and upper halls - the latter the principal room of the castle. Round these polygonal rooms is a maze of passages, leading to the chapel, kitchen and other chambers in the turrets. From the roof there are magnificent views seaward to Orford Ness.

Extwistle Hall The main body of Extwistle Hall dates from 1580, the rear wing from 1637 and was the home of the Parker family. Local legend tells the story of Captain Robert Parker who, after a meeting with the Jacobites in the early 18th Century witnessed a goblin funeral passing near to Extwistle Hall. He hid in some bushes but was horrified to see the goblin procession bearing a coffin inscribed with his own name. He took this as a warning against siding with the Jacobites and withdrew his support, refusing to take any part in the failed uprising of 1715. Extwistle hall is currently abandoned.

Horsford Castle, near to Horsford, Norfolk, Great Britain. A view of the 11th century motte and bailey castle. Consisting of a deep ditch, large bailey and low motte. Founded by Robert Malet or possibly his tenant Walter of Caen. After the main use of defence became less important the castle probably became a hunting lodge. Broadclyst: hillfort earthworks Evidence for the ramparts of the iron age hillfort remains. It dates from the period 400 BC to 43 AD and was built in two phases. Legend has it that a dragon protected treasure in wells at this fort and a second encampment at nearby Cadbury: the treasure served as offerings to the gods to ensure good harvests. As the dragon was always at the other hilltop its existence could never be proved or disproved. Treasure hunters were apparently deterred from plundering the wells for fear of winged attack. Trees on Dolbury were originally planted by John Veitch, a Scot who landscaped the park for the Acland family in the eighteenth century and later became agent for the estate. Croxall Hall in Staffordshire. Croxall Hall is a restored and extended 16th century manor house situated at Croxall, Staffordshire ( close to the southeastern border with Derbyshire and once part of that county). It is a Grade II* listed building.
The manor of Croxall was owned by the Derbyshire family of Curzon and they rebuilt the old manor house in the late 16th century. It was a substantial property, taxed in 1662 for Hearth Tax purposes as having sixteen hearths. The property passed to the Sackville family following the marriage of Mary Curzon, daughter and heiress of the last male Curzon to Edward Sackville, 4th Earl of Dorset.(c) John Duncan, CC BY-SA 2.0

See http://www.keystothepast.info/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRN=N13255 for more of its history. Murray's Handbook (1890) adds fictional romance to the story thus: It (the tower) is said to be haunted by a lady of the family, of whom a Danish prince was enamoured. She was watching from the roof for his coming, when she saw her three brothers murder him upon the shore, after which she starved herself to death in the old tower.

Little known, Wingfield Manor is a huge grand ruin of a country mansion built in 1440 by Ralph Cromwell and is one of the many places Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. It sits atop a small hill over looking the valley below and is quite imposing on the landscape. The ruin is looked after by English Heritage.

Cymbeline's Castle from Ellesborough Church Tower. On a beautiful Bank Holiday Monday (for a change !), we climbed to the top of the fine tower of 282314 which affords excellent views in all directions. To the southwest the scene is dominated by this notable tump. It is an ancient Motte & Bailey system known as Cymbeline's Castle (or Mount). Any connection with the ancient British king - whom Shakespeare wrote a play about - is I think speculative at best. However it has been suggested that the nearby Kimbles (Little & Great) are named after him, so it does at least have some plausible link back to pre-Roman times. Although Shakespeare used the name Cymbeline (for his entirely fictional tale), this 1st Century king who ruled a large area of Southern England before the Roman invasion, is more generally known historically as Cunobelinus, though he is known also by various other names such as Cynfelyn and Kymbelinus. This little mount on which his putative castle stood sits below the higher eminence of Beacon Hill, but manages not to be overshadowed by it, retaining a certain quality - perhaps due to its ancient history.

The site of Sandown Castle It was built in 1537 - 1540 to a very similar design to that of Walmer Castle but almost nothing now remains. The sea started to breach the defences in 1785 but it was still used for another 50 years before being totally abandoned. Some of the stone was removed for use in the town, but the castle was then left to the sea. It has now been covered in concrete to form part of the sea defences.

Chichester Castle stood in the city of Chichester, West Sussex (grid reference SU863051). The remains of the motte are still visible today in Priory Park. The raised mound that was once home to a keep is all that remains of a defensive motte and bailey built by the Normans in the 11th century. Built within the city walls it was demolished in the early 13th century and the land given over the Greyfriars to erect a friary, the only surviving bit being the former guildhall that lies beyond the mound. After the dissolution the land was given over to the Duke of Richmond whose descendants finally passed it over to the city who in turn made it a public park.

Apart from the gatehouse, which was built in 1530, most of the rest of the mansion was pulled down in 1801. It stands close to Kirtling parish church.

Montacute House East Front It was about the time of the Spanish Armada in 1588 that Sir Edward Phelips, a successful lawyer and Speaker of the House of Commons, commissioned the building of Montacute House. It was probably local builder William Arnold who was given the task of creating Sir Edward's new home in the Somerset countryside. Arnold used local Ham Hill stone to create a symmetrical 'H' plan building owing much to the classical detail of the Renaissance style of architecture. There is a carved date of 1601 over the east doorway, probably denoting the year the house was completed. The Phelips family reigned supreme at Montacute for over three centuries, until the agricultural depression of the late C19 saw the last Phelips leave in 1911, and most of the house contents sold. The house was acquired by the National Trust in 1931. Montacute House is Grade I Listed.

Weeting Castle, near to Weeting, Norfolk, Great Britain. Weeting Castle is a 12th-century ruin with a three-story-high tower in Weeting, near Brandon, Norfolk. Despite the name, it is not a castle but actually a fortified manor house. It has a large open hall and an attached two-storey chamber block. There's a domed brick ice-house on the northwest corner of the moat and a small car park next to the church. The moat was added in the 14th century. The place is thought to have been abandoned in 1390. The manor was built on a 10th C settlement. It is now owned by English Heritage. Entry is free and the location is open all year for visitors.

Aerial view of Hadleigh Castle and Country Park Hadleigh Castle is not actually in the country park (which is probably why they changed the name from 'Hadleigh Castle Country Park' to 'Hadleigh Country Park'). This view shows the remains of the castle on a mound overlooking the estuary. In its heyday, the castle would have been right next to the estuary. Today, the middle distance is occupied by Hadleigh Marsh. The area of this beyond the railway line (across the centre) is now used for growing vegetables. Beyond this, near the top centre, the triangular pool is at the western tip of Two-Tree Island. Since this photo was taken, this pool has been colonised by Avocets, and these have recently bred successfully there.

Packington Hall. The "new" hall was built in 1693 in the Italian Renaissance style and replaced 1055253. In 1772 the house was much extended and improved. The exterior was re-clad in the Palladian style by Matthew Brettingham and the interior redesigned by the Italian architect Joseph Bonomi.
At one time the hall was the home of Jane Lane, who helped Charles II to escape from England disguised as her servant.

St Mawes Castle Looking southwards from near the car park. The best preserved and most elaborately decorated of Henry VIIIs coastal fortresses, St Mawes was built to counter invasion threats from France and Spain. Its counterpart, Pendennis, is on the other side of the Fal estuary. The clover-leaf shaped fort fell easily to landward attack by Parliamentarian forces in 1646 and was not properly refortified until the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Plympton Castle. This was a motte & bailey castle. The motte is the high mound with the remains of fortifications on top of it, the bailey is the level area in front of it which is itself some 20 feet above the surrounding ground level. The castle was probably built in the years between 1100 and 1130. It was besieged on two occasions, in 1136 and 1224, both times when the local resident of the castle came into conflict with the King of the time. The bailey area is now used for local events and fairs.

Ince Castle This is Ince Castle which was built in 1642 at the start of the Civil War and was captured in 1646. It consists of 4 three storey towers with walls 4 foot thick. By the 1850s it was used as a farm and was allowed to decay but it was restored in the early 20th century. It burnt down in 1986 (apparently by grandmother being a bit irresponsible with a candle) - but it has now been rebuilt.
In 1649, John Killigrew inherited Ince Castle from an uncle. He married four wives and installed them separately into each of the four towers giving them a story that the fields were plagued with mice - which kept them inside. For some time, each of the four ladies lived happily in ignorance of the other three, until a thicko servant delivered a letter to the wrong wife, and all was revealed!
John Killigrew was sentenced to sixteen years, four years for each count of bigamy. John pointed out to the judge that, as his first marriage was not bigamous, he should serve only twelve years! Good lad.
