Paper disc with a hole in the center, 10 rectangular perforations evenly spaced along perimeter for viewing. In the outermost ring, several still images show the progress of a large cat chasing a small cat with a mouse in its teeth; the large cat jumps over a stool with a red cushion. In the innermost ring, a donkey wearing a blue shirt moves its ears.

Das Phenakistiskop wurde zeitgleich vom belgischen Physiker Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau sowie vom österreichischen Professor für Praktische Geometrie Simon Stampfer im Zusammenhang mit durchgeführten Experimenten zur stroboskopischen Bewegung Anfang der 1830er Jahre entwickelt. 1833 wurden bereits die ersten Modelle des Phenakistiskop in London als Unterhaltungsmedium auf den Markt gebracht.
