M40 Cardinal -93 BA 48- – IWM Duxford (51294902831)
The M40 Gun Motor Carriage was an American self-propelled artillery vehicle based on an enlarged M4 Sherman chassis and carrying the 155mm M2 gun. Manufactured by the Pressed Steel Car Company in Chicago, a total of 311 were built but were too late for WW2 and instead saw action with U.S. forces during the Korean War. A small number saw British Army service where they were named ‘Cardinal’ and designated as the ‘155mm SP, M40’. This rare British example was loaned to the Imperial War Museum by the Royal Artillery Institution in 1966. After public display at the IWM in Lambeth it was moved to Duxford in 1985 where it is maintained in running condition. It is seen on display in the Land Warfare Hall at Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK.
