Replacing an earlier photo with a better version. Delivered new to Laker Airways in Apr-79 as G-GFAL, this aircraft served with them until they ceased operations in Feb-82. Thomson Holidays and the Rank Leisure Group had big contracts with Laker for the upcoming 1982 summer season and approached British Caledonian to see if they would operate the flights. B.Cal formed 'British Caledonian Charter' Ltd with B.Cal holding 51% and The Rank Leisure Group holding 49% of the new company. The leases for two DC-10-10's were taken over by B.Cal in mid Feb-82 and transferred to B.Cal Charter on 01-Mar-82. This aircraft became G-BJZD (the other being G-BJZE). In Oct-85 B.Cal Charter was renamed Cal Air International and the aircraft were re-painted in a new red livery. In Dec-88 British Caledonian was 'absorbed' into British Airways. However BA already had a charter division, British Airtours (which became the 'new' Caledonian Airways) and didn't need Cal Air. So BA's 51% interest in the company was sold to Rank Leisure for a nominal sum and the airline was renamed Novair International. Unfortunately, Rank Leisure really hadn't a clue about running an airline, eventually deciding it was uneconomic, and it was closed down at the end of Mar-90. The DC-10's were stored at Prestwick (PIK), Scotland, they were eventually ferried to Waco (CNW), TX, USA and returned to ILFC. This aircraft became N581LF. In Feb-94 the aircraft was converted to freighter config and leased to Federal Express as N10060. After 35 years (as of Feb-14) it's still in US domestic service with FedEx, although probably not for much longer.
