'Figure de la Fontaine': Contemporary illustration of the fountain chariot from the Ballet comique de la reine, 1581. The chariot, designed like a fountain, contained Queen Louise, her ladies, and musicians. The narrative of the ballet, one of the "magnificences" of the age of Catherine de' Medici, mother of Henri III of France, was based on the myth of Circe, who turned men into beasts. This symbolised the state of civil war in France at the time.
