Photograph of biochemist William Rutter, co-founder of Chiron Corporation and former director of the Hormone Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). William Rutter received the 2003 Biotechnology Heritage Award from the Chemical Heritage Foundation and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) at a plenary breakfast at the four-day BIO 2003 Annual Convention, June 22-25, 2003, at the Washington, D.C., Convention Center. The Biotechnology Heritage Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of biotechnology through discovery, innovation, and public understanding.
