fighting, will assist in bringingone up to a fine pitch of physical condition. As in all other cases, the middle five weeks ofthe training should be the most severe; theweight and temperature checked at every runor walk. The last three or four weeks will beof a less exacting kind, with a gradual easing-offof hard work as the day of the races comes on. Cultivation of a turn of sprinting speed is tobe had by top-speed 200 to 300 yards abouttwice a week after the first month of slow work. The carriage of the half-miler is a little moreupright than that of the sprinter, but he shouldcarry his arms low and generally assume aloose, easy pose and use his shoulders to assistin the swing of the body. For a final sprint, the runner should gather himself together, andthe increased pace must first come from the morerapid play of the arms (still held loose and low)across the body, which must now, with the head,be inclined farther forward than during theslower-taken and longer normal half-mile stride.
