ops, the largest numberyet concentrated against them for an offensive operation,after a terrific bombardment of gas and high explosive shells,were hurled against their positions on a one-mile front north-west of Toul. The Germans succeeded in penetrating front-line trenches and in taking the village of Seicheprey, butafter hand-to-hand fighting, the Americans recaptured thevillage and most of the ground they had lost in the earlyfighting. The German casualties were believed to have beenthe heaviest sustained by them thus far in any operationwhere American troops were opposed to them. The attackingtroops carried rations and intrenching tools, indicating thatthey had expected to occupy the American positions per-manently. Seicheprey lies about seven miles east of theforest of Apremont and ten miles west of St. Mihiel, nearwhere Americans had repulsed some raiding German storm-troops a short time before. The division attacked atSeicheprey was the Twenty-sixth, or New England Division. 88

LUDENDORFFS COLOSSAL DRIVE IN THE WEST The fight was a bitter one. Everything the Germans hadin stock was brought into play. Shells of all calibers, in-eluding gas-bombs, were used. The action became somethingmore than a raid, even a raid on an important scale, for thecardinal principle of a raid is the retirement of the as-sailants to their own lines, after their purpose has beenachieved, but on this occasion the Germans aimed to holdsuch ground as they could- gain. According to statementsmade by prisoners, the German object was to teach theAmericans a lesson, one that would discourage them fromparticipating in more important operations. The result,
