Died at Munich, 10 February, 1901. 7^ Volume I JULY, 1901 No. 3 THE WORK OF MAX VON PETTENKOFER The death of Professor von Pettenkofer, which was briefly alludedto in the last issue of the Journal of Hygiene, has removed one whowas everywhere acknowledged as a great leader among the workers inour science, and as the pioneer who has been mainly instrumental inbringing about the recognition of Hygiene, particularly on its experi-mental side, as a separate subject of investigation and universityinstruction. Pettenkofer was born in 1818 near Neuburg in Bavaria. Hisparents were very poor, but when he was nine years old an uncle, whowas druggist to the Court at Munich, undertook to provide for hiseducation. After finishing his course at the Gymnasium he studiedfor two years at the University of Munich, and when 21 years oldwas apprenticed as a druggist.
