Tar Lily, asphalt volcano, Gulf of Mexico
During NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer's Gulf of Mexico 2014 expedition, scientists went in search of a possible shipwreck and instead found the remnants of two asphalt volcanoes, dubbed the "tar lilies." Known to exist in other areas of the world, this marks the first discovery of these geologic features in the Gulf of Mexico.

AsphaltvulkanAsphaltvulkan ist eine seltene Form des submarinen Vulkans. Der bis zu 800 m hohe vulkanartige Tiefseeberg besteht aus Salz besteht und produziert natürlichen Asphalt, der aus der Spitze austritt. Der Begriff Asphaltvulkanismus wurde eingeführt, ohne dass der Prozess des Asphaltaustrittes bisher erklärt werden kann – allein die Assoziation des Asphaltes mit den Krater- und Rutschungsstrukturen und die morphologische Ähnlichkeit der Asphaltlagen mit magmatischen Lavaflüssen hat dazu geführt.
