Portrait of a gentleman. This painting was thought to depict Massachusetts colonial lieutenant governor William Tailer, painted by John Smibert. The Smibert signature was determined to be a forgery in the 1940s, and the painting has since been reattributed to Thomas Gibson, a Smibert contemporary. The subject's identity is unknown.
