A U.S. Navy Landing Signal Officer on board USS Card (ACV-11) guides a Grumman TBF-1 Avenger of Composite Squadron 1 (VC-1) to recovery on board the ship. In 1943 the Navy combined the former VGS (Escort-Scouting Squadron) and VGF (Escort-Fighting Squadron) into one. These VC (Composite Squadrons) consisted most often of Avengers and F4F/FM Wildcat fighters and operated from escort carriers in both the Atlantic and Pacific. VC-1 operated from USS Card and USS Block Island (CVE-21), sinking five German U-boats.
