Susan Sontag square in Sarajevo
When I first saw this I thought, "Wow, that is really freaking random." Back home, I investigated the square and learned the genesis of its name.
Sontag directed Waiting for Godot during the Siege of Sarajevo and lived in the city for many months. She started controversy among U.S. leftists for advocating U.S. and European military intervention.
Two days after her death in 2004, the mayor of Sarajevo, Muhidin Hamamdzic, announced the city would name a street after her, calling her an "author and a humanist who actively participated in the creation of the history of Sarajevo and Bosnia." On March 30, 2009, it was officially announced that Theater Square in front of the National Theater in would be named after Sontag. On January 13, 2010, the square's new name plate was officially posted.Theater Square of Susan Sontag
