Beschreibung:
St Boniface Kirk, Papa Westray. There has been a kirk on this site since the 8th century when it was an important Pictish ecclesiastical centre, possibly used as a base for missionary activity in Shetland. The island's common name, Papay, derives from the Viking term for an island of priests. The oldest masonry in the current kirk dates from the 12th century, but it was substantially rebuilt around 1700 to make it suitable for presbyterian worship. The outside steps and door lead to the wooden gallery which was installed to provide additional seating.
This building became redundant when the Church of Scotland and Free Church congregations were reunited in 1929, but was restored in 1993.
