Shiplake House The grounds of the house run down to the river, with a haha hiding the towpath which is on this bank from sight of the house. However it can be seen from the river, and thus the river from it. In Victorian times it was owned by Joseph Phillimore, LLD, chancellor of the diocese of Oxford and regius professor of civil law in the university of Oxford. It continues to be a private residence. The ait in the river here is called Phillimore's Island.
