Sherborne Abbey Interior, Dorset
The Abbey dominates the small town, and even on gloomy days, it looks fantastic!
The Central Tower is famous for its huge peal of 8 bells, the heaviest in the world. The Tenor weighs 46-0-5 or just over 2.25 tonnes!
From 705 to 1075, it was a Saxon Cathedral, hence the reason why it still has a bishop.
From 1075 to 1539, a Benedictine Abbey, and now a large Parish Church.
It is one of only two Abbeys in England, the other being Buckfast, to be both a working Abbey and a Parish Church.Relevante Bilder
