Beschreibung:
"This painting portrays the beautiful goddess of the Luo River among lush plants in the watery depths of her domain. She is the subject of one of the most romantic poems in Chinese literature, the ‘Goddess of the Luo River Ode’. It is said this ode was composed by Cao Zhi as he returned home from court following the death of his lover, Consort Zhen. She had ended up marrying his brother, the emperor, but she had been forced to commit suicide after she was implicated in a plot. The poet-prince Cao Zhi came to court and obtained her pillow as a keepsake. On his way home he passed the Luo River, where he saw the goddess in a dream, and later composed the ode in his lover’s memory. The inscription above the goddess in the painting includes lines of the ode where she is said to be as light as a crane standing, on the point of taking to their air but not yet flying."
