Within a decorative interior wall panel, figural scene depicting the battle for the territory of la Franche Comté, showing France conquering the region from Spain. The figure of King Louis XIV stands victorious and immobile on rocks wearing elaborate armor at left. Grieving women in the lower part of the composition represent the conquered cities of the region. Mars, God of War, drags them to the foreground; he carries their coats of arms identifying the cities the women represent. In the background, Hercules and Minerva climb a rock symbolizing the citadel of Besançon. Engraving after a painting by Charles Le Brun at the palace of Versailles.
