The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 ended tragically. The monument is in two parts; one part showing the insurgents defending a barricade and the second showing soldiers and others escaping down a manhole into the sewers, a reference to the 2,000 fighters who disappeared down a single manhole on September 2nd 1944.
The Warsaw Uprising against the German-Nazi occupiers is one of Poland's most famous battles. Over 225,000 civilians (as well as 20,000 soldiers) lost their lives in a battle that lasted for 63 days.Relevante Bilder
