Beschreibung:
These photos were taken in July, 2018 on a 100 F. day. The main glass house is shown, as well as interior details and other properties on the building. The brick house was used for his private needs. Philip Johnson's Glass House is still considered to be the height of modern residential architecture. Because of the many unanticipated problems in the design (1/4" thick glass initially, easily broken; his failure to design barriers between wet and dry places, which lead to mildew, mold and decay; and his use of flat roofs in the snowy Connecticut climate, roofs. leaks, mold and mildew made several of the buildings unfit for habitation. The brick house is closed to visitors because of extreme mildew problems; the bunker, which holds billions of dollars worth of art work given to him by modern artists from the 1960's through his death, is only partially accessible.

The swimming pool, which is just outside the Glass House, is supposed to be shaped to resemble a martini glass, one of Johnson's favorite cocktails.

The hundred plus acre estate was mostly used as a weekend getaway for Johnson and his long-time companion They entertained lavishly, and had many friends in the modern art world. As he aged, Johnson was not afraid to embrace the avant-garde. He invited Lou Reed and ensemble to play at a weekend gathering. He was friends with Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Cindy Sherman, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons and Sol LeWitt, among others.

Was the heating bill outrageous? No numbers were given by the guide, but she indicated it indeed cost a great deal to heat the glass building, even after modern, thermoefficient glass was installed.
