The paddle steamer Soembing. Captain Gerhardus Fabius was sent to Japan by the Dutch government to educate them in the modern art of navigation. October 5t, 1855 commissioner Jan Hendrik Donker Curtius of Dejima hands the Soembing over to the Japanese government on behalf of king Willem III. The ship is renamed Kanko Maru.
