Mother Coyote Sitting, Watching Over Den, Photo 1 of 2 (47924154788)
This mother coyote was hunting along the trail and then calmly sat down in the open near the trail. That is very unusual behavior because these coyotes usually avoid people whenever possible. She alertly watched me and watched back the trail. Later I learned that she had a den with pups back down the trail where she was watching. After other coyotes in the family came into the area, the female slowly walked off away from the den. The coyotes were wet from snow and rain.
This is the lactating, alpha female coyote in the group of about three residential coyotes at Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado. The next photo shows a close-up of this coyote.
