Mare Cognitum
sits in the sencond ring of the Procellarum basin. The mare formations are of the Upper Imbrian epoch, while the surrounding basin material is of the Lower Imbrian epoch. You can clearly make out the mountain range Montes Riphaeus to the northwest of the mare. These mountains are a part of the rim crest of the buried crater or basin, containing the mare.
