(1 in a multiple picture album) See that little river way down there? That's the Colorado River and it is the force that has carved through the layers of earth to expose time. They say that if you hiked down to it, every step you took would move you 1600 more years back in time.

That river is at an elevation which is one mile lower than the rim where you are standing. And the north rim, if you could see it, is ten miles away.
