Der Buddhismus in Kambodscha war in dem Gebiet schon zu Zeiten des Khmer-Großreichs vom 9. bis 15. Jahrhundert präsent. Als Staatsreligion erfuhr der Mahāyāna am Ende des 12. und zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts unter der Regierung König Jayavarmans VII. höchste Förderung.
