On January 15, 2009, following the departure of former Ambassador J. Thomas Schieffer, Jim Zumwalt assumed duties as Charge d'Affaires ad interim in U.S. Embassy Tokyo, pending the arrival of a new Ambassador. From July 2008 until then, he had served as the Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission. Previously, he was Director of the Office of Japanese Affairs in the Department of State, Washington, D.C. (2006-2008).
