S. Giovanni in Laterano. ROME. IV. Ancient Rome. 269 Pilate. — At the top of the steps is the Sancta Sanctorum chapel(not accessible), formerly the private chapel of the popes, and theonly part of the old Latcrau palace now preserved. It was erectedin 1278 by a member of the Cosmas family for Nicholas III., andcontains a Christ in mosaic in the 9th cent, style, another paintedon wood, attributed to St. Luke, and other relics. — The porticotowards the piazza was erected by Sixtus V. From the adjoining angle, to the left, the street diverges to theVilla Wolkonsky (p. 277). To the E. of the piazza just described lies the spacious PiazzaDi Porta S. Giovanni fPI. 11, 33), towards which the principal fa-(;ade of S. Giovanni in Laterano is turned. In front of the church,and to the right by the city-wall, a charming view of the mountainsand the Campagna is enjoyed. To the left, by the Scala Santa, is a tribune erected by Bene-dict XIV., with copies of the ancient Mosaics from the Triclini
