In 1819 he entered the service of the East India Company and was stationed at Madras. From there he made an extensive tour of the southern provinces of India, collecting and distributing among botanists a huge number of plants. Although several of his works involved him in considerable financial loss, he described nearly 3,000 species of plants during his entire career of 35 years in India. His desire, he wrote, was "to diffuse as quickly and as extensively as possible a knowledge of Indian plants"
