Gerrit Smith CJerrit Smith, abolitimiist; born in Itica, March 6, 1797;graduated from Hamilton college, 1818; studied law and \vasadmitted to the bar in 1853; elected as an ultra-abolitinnist tothe 33d congress and served from March 4, 1853, until hisresignation in 1854; opened a tract of 1,000 acres near Peter-boro, N. v., to be given to those who would shield and protectfugitive slaves; used his home as principal station of thefamous underground railroad through which iugitive slaves\vere transported into Canada; died in New \()rk Cit\-, Decem-ber 2^, 1874.

John Brown John Brown, abolitionist; born, Torrington, Conn., May 9,1800; farmer but studied surveying and engineering; took anactive part in the contest for Kansas between the friends offreedom and of slavery in 1855-1856; obtained a farm fromCierritt Smith to be used as a refuge for fugitive slaves, 1S48-1849; attempted the establishment of a defensible establishmentfor fugitive slaves on the soil of Xirginia, 1859; attackedHarpers Ferry, Va., and took a number of peisons prisoner;could have escaped when the soldiers came down on theinvaders but made no effort to do so; was tried and condemnedto death and executed at Charlestown, \a., December 2, 1859.His body is buried at North lilba, Essex county, N.
