The German submarine U-402 under attack by aircraft from the U.S. Navy escort carrier USS Card (CVE-11) in the North Atlantic, 13 October 1943. The Grumman F4F Wildcat was piloted by the commading officer of Composite Squadron 9 (VC-9), Howard M. Avery. The photo was taken by Ensign B.C. Sheela. The submarine was sunk. There were no survivors.
