The German Navy in the Second World War
The German Type IXA U-boat U-39 about to submerge in the Baltic. U-39 had the dubious distinction of being the first U-boat sunk in the war, when it was depth-charged off the north-west coast of Ireland by Royal Navy destroyers on 14 September 1939, after an unsuccessful attempt to torpedo the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal.
