This item consists of a photo showing German officers and their crew from the surrendered U-Boat 873 at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in New Hampshire. German officers, with their backs to the camera and crew, stand on the deck of the tug which brought in their surrendered sub U-873 - the Marine guards stand ready to take the prisoners ashore at Portsmouth. The man in the white cap with his hands behind his back is Captain Steinhoff.

U 873 war ein U-Boot der deutschen Kriegsmarine, das im Zweiten Weltkrieg eingesetzt wurde. Es gehörte zum Typ IX D2, einer Klasse von Langstrecken-U-Booten. Das U-Boot konnte keine Schiffe versenken oder beschädigen und wurde am 11. Mai 1945 – nach der Kapitulation der Wehrmacht – der US Navy übergeben. Am 10. März 1948 wurde es abgewrackt.
