Fusulinid limestone, Upper Pennsylvanian; Elk County KS
Fusulinid limestone (~3.9 cm across) from the Pennsylvanian of Kansas, USA.
This is one of the most amazing fossiliferous limestones I've ever seen. The surface shown here is a monospecific concentration of fusulinid foraminifera ("forams"). Fusulinids are an extinct group of large, benthic forams. They had elongated, rice-like skeletons (tests).
The other (non-photogenic) side of this limestone is also covered with numerous fusulinids, plus a small section of crinoid steam, a Euphemites bellerophontid mollusc, and a Knightites bellerophonitd mollusc.
