Frederick Mockford's Grave, Selmeston Church As the gravestone attests, Mockford was the inventor of the 'Mayday' distress call in 1923. A radio operator at Croydon Airport he was asked to come up with a distress call that would be understood by everybody and settled on a word which would be understood by both English and French pilots. Mayday was agreeable to both being a distinct term in English and deriving from m'aidez - help me - in French. At the time the bulk of the traffic to Croydon Airport came from Le Bourget near Paris.
