On 13 September 1933, Elizabeth Reid McCombs became the first woman in New Zealand to be elected to parliament. McCombs stood in the Chathams-Lyttelton 1933 by-election. She comfortably won the seat, taking 6344 of the 10,288 eligible votes. Her closest rival, Frederick Willie Freeman, gained 3,675 votes, leaving Edward Leslie Hill with only 269. The final tally included 59 rejected votes, and 42 ballots cast by Seamen, of which 41 voted for McCombs.

The image above is from a file transferred to Archives New Zealand from the Electoral Department. It shows the total number of votes for each candidate, and J. J. McGahey, the Returning Officer, publically declaring “the said Elizabeth Reid McCombs to be elected.”
