Düsseldorf Edwin Scharff 01
Home of the 1937 Düsseldorf Exhibition "Schaffendes Volk" - Creative People. Entrance to the exhibition - beyond here in 1937 the avenue was lined with flags with swastikas. These two statues were still unfinished at the opening of the Exhibition on 8 May 1937, and were only finished in 1940. Sculptor - Edwin Scharff who is well known for the "Drei Männer im Boot" statue in Hamburg. Oddly - or perhas not - there is no mention of these monumental sculptures inthis website of Scharff which concentrates on his banning and incorporation into the degenerate art exhibition by the authorities of the time. Photos fo these horses were indeed incorporated into the 1937 Munich exhibition of degenerate art "Entartete Kunst" and he Scharff was banned although he was paid for the work. Despite the ban, he was alowed to complete the monumental granite figures in 1940.
Contemporary photographs of the exhibition show the left hand horse and horseman almost finished, whilst the right hand one was left in rough blocks of granite; the spin on it was that it showed work in progress.Relevante Bilder
