Die Eidechsennattern (Malpolon) zählen zur Familie Psammophiidae, die früher als Unterfamilie der Nattern (Colubridae) geführt wurde. Die Gattung wurde 1826 durch den österreichischen Zoologen Leopold Fitzinger eingeführt.
