Das komische Ballett Coppélia ou La Fille aux yeux d’émail wurde 1870 von Léo Delibes nach einem Libretto von Charles Nuitter und Arthur Saint-Léon komponiert, letzterer erstellte auch die Originalchoreographie. Die Handlung basiert auf E. T. A. Hoffmanns Erzählung Der Sandmann. Die Uraufführung fand am 25. Mai 1870 an der Pariser Oper statt, mit Giuseppina Bozzacchi als Swanilda und Eugénie Fiocre als Franz, und war ein triumphaler Erfolg.
