Theatrical release poster for Charlie Chaplin's 1931 film City Lights. In 2003, this poster design ranked #52 on the American Film Institute's list of the "Top 100 American Movie Poster Classics" (#51–100 via the Internet Archive), part of its 100 Years... series. The full poster as scanned does not have a perceptible copyright notice; it's likely that the poster, as printed and distributed in 1931, did not carry a notice either. But regardless of whether the original poster had a notice, the copyright for the artwork was not renewed in 1958 or 1959 (see the sections for "Artwork: Original registrations and renewals" and refer to the links). Copyright lapsed at that time. Note that the poster is a distinct work from the film and had to be renewed in its own.
