polje, “Cerknisko jezero” (jezero lake), one of several in the karstic area of Slovenia. Cerknisko jezero is a “closed depression”, its (abundant) water is solely drained through natural ponors (sinkholes in the ground, cracks and larger subterranean water ways). The polje is without water management. In wet seasons waters may rise and flood the terrain to become an intermittent lake.
