Tomen y Rhodwydd is a motte and bailey castle built by Owain Gwynedd to protect the borders of Gwynedd Is Conwy from the invading Saxons / English. It stands in an area of fields and low hills to the south of Llandegla in the south-east of Denbighshire.
This, it seems, was the 'Castell yn Iâl' built by Owain Gwynedd in 1149, according to the Brut y Tywysogion, when he seized the hundred of Iâl from the kings of Powys. This area, Iâl, gave its name to the University of Yale.
