Die Shuar sind ein indigenes Volk, das im Amazonastiefland östlich der Anden in Ecuador beheimatet ist. Shuar ist in ihrer Sprache das Wort für „Menschen“. Von Shuar-Verbänden vorgenommene Schätzungen geben an, es gebe 110.000 Shuar in etwa 668 Dorfgemeinschaften (1998). Andere Quellen gehen von mindestens 40.000 Shuar in Ecuador aus.
