Beschreibung:
The photo shows a view of the Izrael K. Poznański factory complex located at Ogrodowa Street. The entrance to the factory area was through the gate visible in the photo, which reminded the inhabitants of a triumphal arch. On its right side there is a small, elegant building that was the seat of the exchange office and the office of the company's directors. The marble interior has been preserved in its interior. On the left side of the gate, you can see a five-storey cotton spinning mill built in 1877-78. This red brick building is 170 meters long. There were five-aisle production halls, in the corners and in the central part there were towers with staircases, ventilation risers and fire tanks. This building was described in Andrzej Wajda's The Promised Land. The Poznań Empire functioned from the 1870s until the outbreak of World War II. After its completion, factory plants, which included weaving, spinning, bleaching and finishing works, dye-house, textile printing and finishing shop, machine repair and construction department, locksmith's shop, foundry and engine room, gas plant, power plant, fire station, warehouses, railway siding and exchange office factory, were nationalized and until the beginning of the 1990s operated as Zakłady Przemysłu Cotton im. Julian Marchlewski "Poltex." At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the private owner of the area revitalized it to create a commercial and service place called "Manufaktura." The spinning mill visible in the photo currently houses Andel's Hotel and a conference center. Its brick envelope is preserved very closely to that seen in the photograph here.
This photograph comes from Bronisław Wilkoszewski's album Views of the city of Łódź, published in 1896. Saryusz Bronisław Paweł Wilkoszewski (1847-1901), known as the "Łódź Canaletto," was a master of illustrative photography. He documented the development of Łódź from the end of the 19th century, mainly villas, factories, public buildings, sacred buildings, and Piotrkowska Street. His photographic studio was located in the villa "Trianon" in Pasaż Meyera 5 (now Moniuszki Street).
