AWM Caption: Bougainville. 30 March 1945. 2/4th Armoured Regiment Australian-manned Matilda tanks advancing along Buin Road over Slater's Knoll, towards the Hongorai River. They are supported by 25 Infantry Battalion troops and a bulldozer. This is the first time tanks have been used in the Bougainville campaign.

Bougainville-Kampagne
Die Bougainville-Kampagne fand während des Pazifikkriegs im Zweiten Weltkrieg statt. Sie bestand aus einer Reihe von Land- und Seeschlachten bei denen die alliierten Einheiten der Vereinigten Staaten, Australiens und Neuseelands gegen die Truppen des Japanischen Kaiserreichs um die Einnahme der Insel Bougainville kämpften. Die Kampfhandlungen begannen mit den amerikanischen Landungen am Kap Torokina am 1. November 1943 und endeten mit der Kapitulation der japanischen Streitkräfte gegenüber den australischen Einheiten auf Bougainville am 21. August 1945.
