A page of a Bhagavata Purana illustrated manuscript in Devanagari, supposedly prepared for Maharaja Pratap Simha of Jaipur (1779-1803). Cropped.

The page contains a passage from the 4th canto, 1st chapter, texts 21 (incomplete) through 25 (incomplete) of the Bhagavata Purana describing the encounter of the Vedic sage Atri Rishi and his wife Anasuya with the Trimurti: Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva seated on their respective vahanas.

The episode is depicted in the upper part of the image above the Devanagari script in Odishi style.

August Wilhelm Schlegel von Gottleben, seit 1812 August Wilhelm von Schlegel, war ein deutscher Literaturhistoriker und -kritiker, Übersetzer, Alt-Philologe und Indologe. Er lehrte ab 1795 an der Universität Jena, von 1798 bis 1801 als außerordentlicher Professor. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Caroline, seinem Bruder Friedrich und dessen späterer Frau Dorothea, Johann Gottlieb Fichte und später Ludwig Tieck sowie Novalis prägte er die neue „romantische Schule“.
