Balmerino Abbey The origin of the name Balmerino is uncertain but maybe derived from 'Bal' , Gaelic for township, and 'Merinach' an early Celtic saint associated with the area. The Abbey was founded in 1229 by Queen Ermengarde, wife of King William the Lion.
