Antoine Chintreuil, painted by his lifelong companion and protégé Jean Desbrosses, c. 1872-1873. Frédéric Henriet in the book La vie et l'oeuvre de Chintreuil (1874), page XXXVIII, calls it a portrait "of a very intimate character. Chintreuil is represented in profile, his features and body emaciated by suffering. Slumped in a large armchair, the poor artist consults a drawing; perhaps it forms some new painting project. Seeing him still cling to the future with this stubborn hope, we cling to this consoling thought: The art that has filled his life will at least have hidden its last hour from him."

Antoine ChintreuilAntoine Chintreuil war ein französischer Landschaftsmaler. Er wuchs in Bresse auf und zog 1838 er nach Paris, wo er 1842 Schüler des Malers Paul Delaroche wurde.
