American Aircraft in Royal Air Force Service 1939-1945- Consolidated Liberator. CH18793
LB-30 Liberator, AL504 "Commando", the personal transport aircraft of the Prime Minister, photographed at Northolt, Middlesex, on returning to the United Kingdom, following extensive modification and a complete overhaul by the Consolidated Aircraft Company at San Diego, California. The main changes to the original airframe involved the fitting of a large single rudder and fin, and the extension of the fuselage by 7 feet. The interior was furnished to accommodate 20 passengers and was fitted with bunks and a stewards galley. AL504 flew with the Communications Squadron of No. 45 (Atlantic Transport) Group, Transport Command, until disappearing over the South Atlantic while flying from the Azores to Ottawa, Canada, on 26 May 1945.

Flugzeugabsturz bei Gibraltar (1943)Der Flugzeugabsturz bei Gibraltar war ein Flugunfall am 4. Juli 1943 um 23:06 Uhr Ortszeit. Dabei stürzte eine zum Transportflugzeug umgebaute Consolidated Liberator der Royal Air Force nur 16 Sekunden nach dem Start auf dem Flughafen Gibraltar in die Straße von Gibraltar. Mit Ausnahme des Piloten starben bei dem Aufprall alle anderen 16 Passagiere und Besatzungsmitglieder, darunter der Ministerpräsident der polnischen Exilregierung, Władysław Sikorski, der sich mit Begleitung auf dem Rückflug von einer Inspektion des 2 Korpus Polski in Palästina befand, das er von der britischen RAF Basis Qastina aus verlassen hatte. .. weiterlesen
