PREFACE By Adolf Friedrich, Duke of Mecklenburg The Central African Expedition of 1907 to 1908, whenI travelled with a staff of scientific specialists throughthe unexplored country between Lake Victoria andLake Kiwu, had valuable scientific results. Our ex-periences in the tropical forests on the banks of theAruwimi and Congo Rivers impressed upon us thelamentable deficiency at the present day of botanicaland zoological knowledge concerning the interiorof Africa. In order to supplement this knowledge,by providing a picture of the aborigines, as well ofthe flora and fauna of the country north of theseforests, for comparison with known facts in otherparts, it seemed to us, after consulting many dis-tinguished scientists, that a second expedition waseminently desirable. Adolf Friedrich Albrecht Heinrich Herzog zu Mecklenburg war ein deutscher Hochadeliger, Afrikareisender, Kolonialbeamter und Sportfunktionär. Er war der letzte Gouverneur der deutschen Kolonie Togo und am Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs kurzzeitig als Staatsoberhaupt des geplanten Vereinigten Baltischen Herzogtums vorgesehen.
