A Chrysomelid beetle This insect belongs to the very large family of Chrysomelidae (the Leaf Beetles). The one shown here is resting on the leaf of a Bird Cherry tree. It is possibly a Heather Beetle (Lochmaea suturalis), a fairly common species that is named after the plant on which it usually feeds. For comparison, see: http://www.biol.uni.wroc.pl/cassidae/European%20Chrysomelidae/lochmaea.htm – that site also illustrates the other two British species in the genus Lochmaea, namely, L. caprea (Willow Leaf Beetle) and L. crataegi (Hawthorn Leaf Beetle).
